Whatcha doing hon?

That seems like an innocent question, but to the parent of an autistic child, it's usually asked with trepidation. I tend to be wary of what my little bear carrying nugget is up to when things get quiet. "Whatcha doing hon?" She either didn't hear me, or was ignoring me until I changed my voice to my 'I mean business' voice. (The latter was probably true.) Maymay was sitting on the couch staring at the laptop while the movie Pitch Perfect was BLARING on tv.  So, I asked her again.

Me: Whatcha doing hon?

Maymay: Reading.

Let me pause here for a moment in this story. Maymay doesn't read voluntarily. It doesn't happen. PLUS, she was on the computer. So that was genuinely the last answer I expected.

Me: Okay. What are you reading?

Maymay: (Deep sigh like I was obviously bothering her.) The movie transcript of Pitch Perfect.

Me: Oh. (Pause for it to sink in.) Wait. What?

Maymay: I'm reading the movie as I watch the movie.

Me: Why?

Maymay: Why not? I'm seeing if there are any mistakes.

Me: um...hon? A transcript is the exact words from the movie. It will be word for word. That's what a transcript is.  You're not going to find errors.

Maymay: You don't know that. There could be a mistake and I'm looking for them.

First let me give a huge thank you to the movie, We Bought a Zoo, for the line 'why not'. She uses it all the time. ALL the time. <sigh> Well, apparently she did a search for pitch perfect and found the transcript. It made perfect sense to her to read the movie as she watched it.

Of course it did.
