Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is the debut novel by American author Ransom Riggs. The book tells the tale of a boy who, following a horrific family tragedy, follows clues that take him to an abandoned orphanage on a Welsh island. The story is told through a combination of narrative and vernacular photographs from the personal archives of collectors listed by the author.

This young adult book was originally intended to be a picture book featuring photographs Riggs had collected, but on the advice of an editor at Quirk Books, he used the photographs as a guide from which to put together a narrative. Riggs was a collector of photographs, but needed more for his novel. He met Leonard Lightfoot, a well-known collector at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, and was introduced to other collectors. The result was a story about a boy who follows clues from his grandfather's old photographs which lead him on an adventure that takes him to a large abandoned orphanage on a Welsh island.

The book has been a New York Times best seller. It reached the #1 spot on the Children's Chapter Books list on April 29, 2012 after being on the list for 45 weeks, remaining there until 20 May, when it dropped to the fourth spot on the list. Critics have generally praised the book for creative use of vintage photographs as well as good characterization and settings.

I loved this movie. It definitely fits Tim Burton's style of work. I love most of his movies. Especially Edward Scissorhands. I like that he puts his wife in some of them. That's kind of cool. Helena Bonham Carter is awesome. I think he is an amazing director and should keep making movies. He may have some darker themes for his movies but it works for him. My favorite characters were Emma and Millard. Emma's peculiarity was kind of cool. She could float but those shoes must be heavy to walk in. I really liked Millard. He was a cute little invisible boy. Plus he could sneak up on people. Samuel L. Jackson is an awesome bad guy. I never expect him to play bad guys because he's Nick Fury but he is really good at playing bad guys. My favorite parts were when he was being held up against the wall and the skeleton dummies. Miss Peregrine seemed very odd. A bit crazy. The twins were cool. It took me a while to figure out what their peculiarity was. I didn't know until they told me. They are like mini gorgons. I wonder if the people who run the homes have a last name that matches the bird they turn into. I think the book is just as interesting and just as adventurous. It would be cool to have a peculiarity. If I had one I think I would like it to be to control plants like the girl who grew the giant carrot or to control earth. That would be fun. I don't understand the boat thing though. It obviously sank for a reason so if they brought it back up wouldn't it just sink again? There is no way they would have been able to sail with it. The hollows were creepy with no face. They sort of remind me of creatures from Doctor Who. The ones with only a mouth and the top hats. Except they had long arms and legs and tentacles in their mouths. Definitely worth seeing this movie. I would see it again.

Review: the MAGNIFICENT seven

Seven gun men in the old west gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves.

It was ok but it wasn't my favorite. I liked that they helped fight for a town. Take back what belongs to the people. I liked that they weren't going to sit back and get bullied by thieves. I like Wild West things but I like the stuff that get's blown up or gun fights and there weren't very many of those. Honestly the gun fights were the only parts I liked. Especially the fight at the end of the movie. Everything else just seemed slow and boring. Those parts were kind of losing my interest. I do like that a girl was fighting with them and that it wasn't all guys being the hero. Honestly we should have more movies where women are heroes. I think Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington made good cowboys. They would have made good real life cowboys. I liked that he Denzel could speak Indian. That was pretty cool and got him to help in the fight against the thieves. I just really wish there was more action to it. It needs more explosions. More excitement. What was the point of the burning church? It was still there just burned. I think it was a waste to burn the church although I liked that they hung the bell back up later but why didn't they just fix the whole thing?  Was it because it could have been burnt down again or just that they didn't want to do it? I liked Chris Pratt's character. He was kind of funny and kind of awesome. I think he was the best one in the movie. He had awesome shooting skills. I liked that he could do magic tricks. Although he killed the people he showed them to. I thought it was cool and funny but mean at the same time. I also thought it was kind of brilliant because it distracts your enemy and then you kill them. A bit genius actually.

Review: Deepwater Horizon

Based on the true events that occurred on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, the story chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival in the face of what would become one of the biggest man-made disasters in world history.
Picture
This movie was so good. I loved it. That must have been so scary to live in real life. It looked so horrifying. I can see why then never wanted to go back to that job. Why would anyone leave without checking the safety of the Deepwater Horizon? Even if someone told them to do it. Safety checks should always be done. I liked how Mike stayed to looked for other people. He risked his life to make sure others got off safely. What really bugs me is that BP was charged for manslaughter but the charges were dropped. They are  the ones who forced the pressure check which caused the blow out. That was some explosion and it was their faults. At least that's what it looked like. Working with oil looks super dangerous and a reason I will never do it. I can't believe they went through all that. I feel kind of bad about it. I suggest bringing tissues if you see this movie. The ending might make you cry. I admit I did. It was nice to see most of them survive. It's sad that 11 of them didn't make it. I can't imagine how their families must feel. That fire was huge. I never knew how big a oil rig fire can get. I never want to see one in person. They probably had nightmares about it after. Maybe for months or years. I wouldn't blame them. I would be just as scared from what happened. This movie is worth watching and worth the money to see. Just don't forget them tissues for the end. I thought the pictures at the end were pretty cool. A tribute to the men who died. It was kind of sweet. The actors were really good. I think the guy who played Jimmy looked a lot like the real one.

Review: Blair Witch

After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his vanished sister Heather, James and a group of friends head to the forest believed to be inhabited by the Blair Witch.

This movie was as about as bad as the first one but more creepy. It was also a larger group of people. There were six instead of three. I wasn't a big fan of the two locals that went with James's group into the woods. It was kind of mean for them to make fake stick figures and scare them like that. They were already freaked out. So Peter went missing, the local girl was killed and Ashley was injured and disappeared. The bug coming out of her leg was gross though. Again they enter the creepy forest without leaving a trail behind. Always leave a trail so you don't get lost. How hard is that? Also if you knew your sister went missing why would you enter in the first place? You would think that if your own sister went missing that you would assume bad things will happen if you go where she went. Also shouldn't his sister's body still be there even though it's been twenty years? No one would have been there to remove it. Anyone who goes there dies. The local guy who found the video creeped me out. When they were in the house it looked like he was trying to kill them. I think what made this movie creepier is that they showed the witch's face. You got to see the witch this time. I think it was kind of cool but definitely creepy. Not really scary though. There was nothing to make you ump or scream.
Also what happened to James after the girl got killed? They didn't show him injured or killed so what happened?

review: Blair Witch Project

Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.

This was kind of cool. I liked how they made it to look like a documentary even though it wasn't a real one. Though what I don't get is why they didn't call for help with a phone. Someone could have went looking for them. Maybe someone with a map or a trail of string so they can find their way back. Also after they found the first creepy thing of evidence why didn't they just turn around and go back the way they came? Who doesn't mark a trail with something so they can find their way back? If I heard a story about a witch and people disappearing  I would have never  went looking for the cause even if it was supposed to be only a legend. Sometimes the stupid decisions people make in horror films make you wonder how stupid the characters are. Never go into a creepy house in woods that are being haunted by a witch. Just like you should never answer your phone to an unknown caller or go into the basement or leave your room when someone is in the house when no one else is supposed to be home. Seriously make smart decisions people otherwise you end up dead. They kept going and they kept getting into more trouble. They made a bunch of dumb decisions for some documentary and now they are missing in the woods most likely dead. Although Josh standing in the corner facing a wall was weird. He didn't move to scare Heather or anything. He was just there. It probably would have been more scary if it was a real documentary. I would be so scared if that was real.

Retro Review: teen wolf

Picture
A struggling high school student discovers that his family has an unusual pedigree when he finds himself turning into a werewolf.

I actually enjoyed this movie. I did find it strange that when he turned into a wolf no one screamed. They just played basketball after staring a few minutes at him. They then made him famous because he's a wolf. That wouldn't happen. People would be chasing him out of town. That kind of stuff isn't normal. I do think it was wrong to use his wolf form to gain popularity though. Also how is it that in the beginning the team stinks and loses basketball games but when he's the wolf all of the sudden they can play and start winning. Life doesn't work that way. Also wouldn't a cop pull over someone who is driving with a person standing on the roof. It is dangerous and I'm pretty sure illegal. Why would his family not tell him big news like this? Something big like that should never be hidden. Especially since it could happen at anytime. Sometimes I wish there was a little bit more logic in movies.  Also why are movies always about wolves or vampires?  What about the other creatures like gorgons, mummies, ghosts, the headless horseman, ect. They're all creepy things. Why do werewolves and vampires get the most recognition? Seems kind of unfair to the other creatures. Also how could he like a girl who only liked him for the wolf but would never talk to him before she found out? How did he not see that that was wrong along with the fact she had a boyfriend and was flirting with Scott? How was her boyfriend still dating her? Pamela was the worst.

Review: The Shallows

Whoever A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills.

This movie was not my favorite. There was nothing to it. It was just girl vs. shark the whole time. Ok so there were 8 characters total. 2 were only there for a second, 3 were eaten by the shark, 2 didn't come until the end and 1 was bitten and living on a rock. The main character actually. The only thing that confused me about her was if she lived or died at the end. That was not clear. Also sharks don't eat every hour like that. Eventually it would have left. The three characters that were eaten were stupid for not listening to her when she screamed that there was a shark. Though I do think two of them deserved it when they left her behind the first time. How could they not have heard her screaming for help? Also how did the ship not see the  second flare? What really got me was how the shark didn't  die when it was on fire. The logic is off. There should have been something else to it. A story behind the beach or something. It just felt like it was missing stuff.  It just wasn't that entertaining. Girl vs. shark for a whole movie wasn't the best idea. Whoever had this idea should not be happy about this. It just wasn't good.

The story of Chesley Sullenberger, who became a hero after gliding his plane along the water in the Hudson River, saving all of the airplane flights 155 crew and passengers.

This movie was so amazing. I loved it. I liked how they showed different scenario outcomes depending on what decisions he made. At first I was confused on how they started it but then it made sense. This man had an option between two airports but chose to land in the water. It was kind of smart. I wasn't a fan that the insurance people tried to say that he was able to save the plane when there was no option. It took them until the hearing to prove he was right.  If he had returned to LaGuardia  Airport they would have landed in the water but they would have hit the runway and died. If he had chosen Teterboro Airport he would of hit a building. I think that they shouldn't have questioned it for he saved everyone on the plane. 155 people including himself. I also liked how they showed the accident from different points of view. The pilots',the ferry guy,and the bridge. Another thing that bugged me about the council people was that they recreated it but they practiced 17 times just to do it. They didn't have the experience Sully had when he was flying the actual plane. How was that even the same? Even after a 35 second delay it would have ended badly for the plane so he had no choice but the water. I think he made the right choice. I liked how he shared the credit with all the others. The flight attendants, the police, the ferries, and the ambulances. He's right though. They all helped. Though I still think he's a hero. This movie is worth seeing. Also the make up people did a good job. Tom  looked very similar to the real Sully as did Laura to  the wife. I really like the end with the real pictures and footage of the real passengers and the captain.
