Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is the debut novel by American author Ransom Riggs. The book tells the tale of a boy who, following a horrific family tragedy, follows clues that take him to an abandoned orphanage on a Welsh island. The story is told through a combination of narrative and vernacular photographs from the personal archives of collectors listed by the author.

This young adult book was originally intended to be a picture book featuring photographs Riggs had collected, but on the advice of an editor at Quirk Books, he used the photographs as a guide from which to put together a narrative. Riggs was a collector of photographs, but needed more for his novel. He met Leonard Lightfoot, a well-known collector at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, and was introduced to other collectors. The result was a story about a boy who follows clues from his grandfather's old photographs which lead him on an adventure that takes him to a large abandoned orphanage on a Welsh island.

The book has been a New York Times best seller. It reached the #1 spot on the Children's Chapter Books list on April 29, 2012 after being on the list for 45 weeks, remaining there until 20 May, when it dropped to the fourth spot on the list. Critics have generally praised the book for creative use of vintage photographs as well as good characterization and settings.

I loved this movie. It definitely fits Tim Burton's style of work. I love most of his movies. Especially Edward Scissorhands. I like that he puts his wife in some of them. That's kind of cool. Helena Bonham Carter is awesome. I think he is an amazing director and should keep making movies. He may have some darker themes for his movies but it works for him. My favorite characters were Emma and Millard. Emma's peculiarity was kind of cool. She could float but those shoes must be heavy to walk in. I really liked Millard. He was a cute little invisible boy. Plus he could sneak up on people. Samuel L. Jackson is an awesome bad guy. I never expect him to play bad guys because he's Nick Fury but he is really good at playing bad guys. My favorite parts were when he was being held up against the wall and the skeleton dummies. Miss Peregrine seemed very odd. A bit crazy. The twins were cool. It took me a while to figure out what their peculiarity was. I didn't know until they told me. They are like mini gorgons. I wonder if the people who run the homes have a last name that matches the bird they turn into. I think the book is just as interesting and just as adventurous. It would be cool to have a peculiarity. If I had one I think I would like it to be to control plants like the girl who grew the giant carrot or to control earth. That would be fun. I don't understand the boat thing though. It obviously sank for a reason so if they brought it back up wouldn't it just sink again? There is no way they would have been able to sail with it. The hollows were creepy with no face. They sort of remind me of creatures from Doctor Who. The ones with only a mouth and the top hats. Except they had long arms and legs and tentacles in their mouths. Definitely worth seeing this movie. I would see it again.
