Eddie the Eagle

I didn’t know a lot about Eddie the Eagle, other than that he was a ski jumper. As I understand it, this movie is pretty loosely based on Eddie's real story, and the end result is about as close to pure and undistilled underdog sports drama as it gets. Despite an almost total lack of any natural sporting ability whatsoever, Eddie is an Olympics geek who wants nothing other than to represent Great Britain in… well, any sport that will have him. This is a movie worth seeing, even if it's not entirely true.

Room

Just watched Room. It's a very well made movie with exceptional acting. However, I'm incredibly conflicted about my feelings and emotions right now. I didn't expect to have flashbacks from my childhood.
I was heavily abused and kept locked in my bedroom for more than a year. I finally escaped and ran away at thirteen. I won't go into details, but it was brutal and took me many years of therapy to decide I wanted to live.
I'm the person I am today because of everything I've survived. I don't reflect on my past normally, but this movie has brought so much to the surface that I'm hurting in a way I haven't in many years.
Even saying all that, I don't regret seeing Room. It is honestly one of the best movies I've seen this year.

Age of Adaline

Sweet, complex, far-fetched, and romantic. This movie made me happy. It's not my typical favorite movie. Nothing blows up, and there isn't a single stormtrooper to be found. Yet, I loved the movie enough to ignore the more than two hour run time and actually wish the story went longer. Blake Lively was classic and beautiful, and Michiel Huismen was absurdly beautiful and sweet. Harrison Ford was perfect. I'd happily see this again in the theater.

Clouds of Sils Maria

Juliette Binoche is a goddess. There really is no use trying to find any other words to describe her. I could truly spend hours describing her uber talented self, and still not feel I did her justice. What I feel I should do is admit how surprised I was at Kristen Stewart's performance. I expected to hate her. Instead, I genuinely wanted to know her. She was intelligent, and held her own on screen. Add in the stunning shots of the Alps and this is most definitely a movie to see.

tHE lONGEST rIDE

I owe Nicholas Sparks an apology. I may have made a few not so kind remarks about his movies in the past. This movie proved me wrong. It was sweet and romantic while giving some really decent rodeo and bull riding moments. I liked this movie far more than I assumed I would. It's a good date movie, and I'm pretty sure attendance at local rodeos will increase too.

Furious 7

I went to the screening knowing the movie was going to be cheesier than a block of Velveeta. I wasn't expecting to truly enjoy the experience as much as I did. It's absolutely the best movie of the franchise. The best part of the movie is most certainly the ending. I refuse to give anything away, but be prepared for a level of feels that you don't see coming.

Get Hard

Well...it has moments when it's actually funny, and moments where it's uncomfortably racist. I'm pretty sure I'm not an overly sensitive person, and can take a joke, but this stretches the limits. Overall, it's just a blah movie that would be good for a Redbox and pizza night.

Home

I'm not a huge fan of animated movies, so didn't expect much. I wasn't impressed, but it didn't make me want to scoop out my eyeballs with a spoon either. It's a decent movie for kids with cute aliens. It did make me crave a slurpee.

The Wedding Ringer

In the spirit of full disclosure...I am not a fan of Kevin Hart. Nothing I've seen him in has impressed me. Until now. I loved this movie! I laughed at several parts and chuckled often. This isn't an Oscar performance. It is a funny movie to see with friends. Was worth the cost of the movie AND popcorn.

The Duff

Mean Girls meets Clueless meets almost any John Hughes movie. It's a typical teen movie, so don't go in with any other expectations. I do have to admit, it isn't the worst teen movie I've seen.

Into the Woods

YOU MUST SEE THIS. It's a fantastic Broadway adaptation of a remarkable musical. Meryl Streep is a goddess, Johnny Depp is %@#$@# fantastic as the pedophilic wolf, and Anna Kendrick was surprisingly wonderful. The entire cast made me insipidly happy and I'm not ashamed to admit I've seen it three times already.

Annie

It's a hard knock life. Yep. It's Annie B. The new and improved. (Did you detect the sarcasm?) Although I liked parts of the movie, overall I wasn't impressed with the reboot. Music was a definite improvement, and I liked Annie herself. HATED Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan. Maybe it's because I can't picture anyone other than Carol Burnett in the iconic role. I also sorely missed Tim Curry in this version. The music was great and I LOVED the new version of Tomorrow.

Paddington

I am NOT a fan of most kids movies. I feel they talk down to kids on an absurd level, or they try too hard to hide adult jokes for the parents stuck watching it. This movie wasn't like either. It truly is the best kids movie I've seen in quite a while. Funny, great actors, and the insanely cute British accents made me love it even more. Great movie to see with the kiddos. I'm already looking forward to owning this one.

Wild

In 2005, age 26, Cheryl Strayed walked The Pacific Crest Trail, which runs up the entire Western spine of the USA from the Mexican to the Canadian border, to get clearance in her head after a grim decade of loss and personal meltdown. I immediately understood why and sympathized with her. Reese played the part beautifully and made me feel her pain and frustration. I completely admire Cheryl and the way she was able to turn her life around.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

This is it. The last installment of Tolkien's magical adventures. I'm incredibly sad to see it all come to an end. This movie was a perfect ending to the Hobbit. I loved it, and although there were minor things I would've preferred to be different, I completely enjoyed the movie and the adventure.

Exodus: Gods and Kings

Let me start by saying an Easter story being released at Christmas bothers me. Okay, now I can discuss the movie. I truly don't understand the need to take so many creative licenses with this story. The Bible is written, you just have to adapt it to the screen with seriously talented actors and kick ass CGI. Seems like a no-brainer. Christian Bale was a strong Moses. In fact, I have zero issues with the cast. My complaints were the utter ridiculous attempt at making a Christian story more palatable for the general masses. Why is it a sin to make a GOOD Christian movie? Why do you have to tone down God in a story from the bible? Overall, it was one of the better Christian movies. It was good, just could've been so much better.

Before I go to Sleep

Amnesia, check. Great leading actors, check. Blockbuster hit movie...yeah, not so fast. It was a slow to start thriller with a few interesting twists and turns. It wasn't bad, but certainly not what I had hoped for with this strong and talented cast. Mark Strong was a perfect mix of uber hottie and caring physician. Hell, if he were an actual doctor, I'd invent reasons to see him. Colin Firth is, well, Colin Firth. I'll watch anything with him in it. Look, it's definitely worth seeing, but I wouldn't rush to see it in theaters. Wait to see it one night when you have a coupon for Redbox and a decent wine to enjoy.

Ouija

Well. I saw Ouija. I knew from the PG-13 rating this was not going to be the horror movie of the year, but I had some hopes for something cool since Michael Bay's name is attached to this. No cool explosions to break up the monotony, and not a single alien robot. Psh. Anyway, there are a few decent scares, but most of the time I was laughing at the absurdity of the story. I don't want to give anything away, but I'm pretty glad I use Glide dental floss picks instead of regular dental floss. This is a perfect pre-teen horror flick for kids that are easily scared.

The Good Lie

Thankfully, The Good Lie is not about white Americans swooping in to save the day, but rather the harrowing journey of four orphans from their obliterated village to a Sudanese refugee camp just over the Kenyan boarder. It's a good movie that tells a story of the Sudanese Lost Boys that needs to be told.  The most moving part for me was knowing that there was authenticity in the story. Three of the main actors were Sudanese Lost Boys themselves, and one was the child of Sudanese refugees. You truly feel their personal stake in the story as their characters. The Good Lie is a story with heart, tragedy, humor, and hope. Do yourself a favor and go see it.

Pride

Pride is one of those “based on an inspirational true story” movies you should be able to bat away with a cynical swipe of your hand, but instead leaves you clapping and cheering. I'm not ashamed to admit I left the theater wanting to hug any lesbian, gay, or miner I should come across. I did manage to find both lesbian and gay friends to hug and tell about this movie. (And a few strangers that may or may not think I'm a bit strange) I highly recommend you see Pride immediately. If you happen to know any miners, let me know. I owe them a hug.

Left Behind

This movie could've been so much more than it is had it just followed the book instead of limiting the story to only the events on the plane. There were moments I liked, but not the moments the director was going for. There were dramatic moments that were so over-acted and fake they became funny. There was no reason to have an overly angry little person making every stereotypical insult to little people as well as being anti-Muslim. The absurdness minimizes the message of the movie.

Hector and the Search for Happiness

In case you aren't aware Simon Pegg has massive geek appeal. He is adorably nerdy, and uber talented. I'm not even ashamed to admit I have a serious crush on him. While I like Simon Pegg very much, I don't like him in this movie. It's a self-help book turned into a movie. I'm just not sure it should have been. In fairness, I never read the book. I only read a few pages in my quest to understand why Pegg would even make this movie. It isn't the worst movie I've seen. That title is still held by Winter's Tale. I just couldn't get past the feeling that the movie was made to try to force me to discover what makes me happy. I already know that answer. Star Wars. Sadly, this movie didn't make me happy at all.

Wish I Was Here

I adored Kate Hudson's performance in this movie. She is simply wondrous. The movie a sweet look at a complete failure of a son and husband. He obviously loves his family and strives to be a good dad, but is completely self-centered. This isn't a blockbuster kind of movie. It's a decent movie with seriously kick ass music, good cast, and freaking adorable kids. Not bad Mr. Braff. Not bad at all.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This extraordinarily epic movie has stunning special effects, genetically evolved and uber intelligent apes, and is absolutely badass. It takes you on an emotional journey while making you grip the seat in the theater like you're on the most thrilling of roller coasters. The tagline "Caesar is pissed" is an understatement. Yeah, Caesar is pissed, but he's also loving, thoughtful, a strong leader, considerate, compassionate, and a damn good father. This movie is absolutely the blockbuster movie of the summer.

Transformers Age of Extinction

It's a typical Michael Bay movie. Lots of boobs and bombs...I mean explosions. Storyline is lame, but who care? Bumblebee rocks!!

The Signal

What the hell did I just see? It's hard to explain my feelings about this movie without giving anything away. What I will say is this, they should hand out prophylactics as you walk in. It's a complete mind #^@%.

Edge of Tomorrow

When I read the premise for this I immediately assumed it was an alien version of Groundhog Day. Instead it's more like a Starship Troopers/Matrix/Source Code/Groundhog Day mash-up of serious alien butt kicking goodness. Yeah, I liked this movie. It's a seriously fun action movie that delves a bit deeper than expected. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Maleficent

Angelina Jolie is the perfect Maleficent. Wicked and magical, yet motherly and somehow endearing. She proves that acting isn't just reciting lines, but the nuances of each lifted eyebrow or sneer. Angelina isn't portraying Maleficent, she is Maleficent. Sam Riley makes a perfect minion as Diaval, a beautiful raven that offers his life in service after Maleficent saves him. He was a perfect match with Jolie. I was mesmerized by the movie and my only compliant is the overly annoying pixies. This is a stunningly beautiful movie that you should see immediately.

Blended

Well...it wasn't terrible. Truthfully, there were a couple of decent scenes and I did laugh once. Overall it wasn't the worst movie I've seen, just far from the best.

Chef

I'm extremely glad I ate before seeing this movie, but it didn't help much. The food in this was unbelievably incredible. I just wanted to eat everything Chef Carl made. I only wish there was taste-o-vision. Yeah, there was a storyline that was enjoyable and funny, but truthfully...I just want to eat EVERYTHING he made. I will now master making a grilled cheese sandwich that crunches as perfectly as the one Chef Carl made. Hopefully.
