First let me state that I adore Liam Neeson. I will watch anything with him in it, and usually will rave about it for weeks until everyone starts avoiding me just to stop hearing about the general awesomeness that is Liam Neeson. I'm not going to give any spoilers or ruin the plot for anyone. (hopefully) I thoroughly enjoyed the story line of Liam's character  and appreciated the manner it was woven into the movie. The humorous moments were very appreciated and were actually laugh out loud funny, not just a polite chuckle. The animatronics were downright amazing. The alpha wolf was HUGE and almost mythological in size and his character.

All that being said...I seriously disliked the movie. There were too many moments where the characters seemed to forget what they were just doing. (This is a bit of a spoiler) An example: they made "boom sticks" to fight back against the wolves, even spent time sharpening the spears and burning the ends to make them stronger....then only used one and never carried the spears for protection. They were suddenly forgotten, even though they were emphasized.  It was maddening to see. I was NOT alone in my frustration as I could hear many of the people around me asking some of my same questions. I also HATED the ending. I like the moments leading up to it, the set up. BUT...the actual ending. Seriously? The ENTIRE theater booed and yelled about it. There was even discussion in the ladies room that we could spend a few minutes with toilet paper rolls and come up with a better ending.

Overall, it wasn't the worst movie I've seen...but I won't watch it again.

I can definitely see your points, especially about the forgetful characters. But I'm not sure how any other ending would have worked. I was truly impressed that the movie-makers didn't opt for the 'everything is all happy in the end' cop-out, which seems to happen pretty frequently. Not exactly the feel-good hit of the year, but still entertaining.
Also, Liam Neeson's continued bad-assery can make up for a LOT of weaknesses.
